Built only for rural communities on mini-grids

Buy electricity for your home,
with just your meter number

Aditus Pay is being built to help families in rural Nigeria pay for the electricity they get from their local mini-grid. You type in your meter number, choose how much power to buy, and get your token in the app or on the website. Aditus Pay is getting ready to launch: buying electricity and adding money to a wallet are not open yet, and no mini-grid is connected yet.

The Aditus Pay Home screen: a greeting, a wallet balance of 20,000 naira, an Add money button and a box to type a meter number. Sample data.

Many rural communities now have power. Paying for it is still too hard.

Across rural Nigeria, small solar power stations called mini-grids are bringing electricity to communities the national grid never reached. But the ways to pay for that power were designed for people in cities. We built Aditus Pay for the people the city tools left out.

The problem for families

In many rural communities, buying electricity means walking to a vendor who may not be there, or handing cash to someone with no receipt. Phone signal comes and goes. Many people do not have a bank card or a smartphone. When buying power is this hard, homes sit in the dark even while the solar plant nearby is producing electricity.

The problem for the power company

The companies that build and run mini-grids produce electricity they often cannot collect payment for. Cash changes hands without records. They cannot easily see how much each site has earned. Every naira they lose makes it harder to keep the lights on and harder to build the next mini-grid in another rural community.

Aditus Pay is built to solve both problems at once. Families get a simple way to buy power on their phone. Power companies get a clear record of every payment, so they know exactly what each site has earned.

Made for the way people in rural communities really live

Before we build anything, we ask one question: will this work for someone with a small phone, weak signal, and who may not read English? If the answer is no, we do not ship it.

Only your meter number

You do not need to know the name of your power company, your site, or your tariff. Type the number written on your meter. Aditus Pay finds the right power company for you and checks the meter is real before you pay anything.

On your phone or in a browser

Aditus Pay is made for the app on a smartphone and for the website, on a phone or a computer. It is the same account and the same wallet in both.

Buy power for someone else

Type in the meter number of your mother, your neighbour or your shop, and pay from your own wallet. This means a person without a bank account can still get electricity, by giving cash to a family member or friend who has Aditus Pay.

Keeps working when the signal goes

If you lose signal in the middle of buying power in the app, your purchase is saved on your phone. It is sent automatically as soon as the signal comes back. You are never charged twice for the same purchase.

In Hausa and English

You can use the app in Hausa or in English, and change between them whenever you like. Your money and your history stay exactly the same.

Your money is always safe

If buying power fails, your money goes back into your wallet. Sometimes the result is not clear straight away, for example when the network drops. In that case we do not guess. We hold the payment and check with the power company first. You will never lose money for power you did not get.

Your token, first on the receipt

Your token is the number you type into your meter to load the electricity. It is the first thing on your receipt, with a button to copy it, and it stays in your history so you can find it again.

What Aditus Pay looks like on your phone

These are real screens from the Aditus Pay app. The names, numbers and amounts on them are sample data, and the fee amounts on the check screen are hidden. Buying electricity and adding money are not open yet.

  • Home screen: a greeting, the wallet balance, an Add money button and a box to type a meter number and buy electricity.

Home. Your balance, and a quick way to buy power.

  • Check before you pay: the meter number, the name on the meter, the operator, the total of 2,000 naira, and lines for the electricity value, service fee and VAT, with those amounts hidden.

Check before you pay. The name on the meter, the company and the full price.

  • Your electricity token: 20 digits in large numbers, with buttons to copy it, share the receipt or download a PDF, then the receipt details.

Receipt. Your token comes first, ready to type into the meter.

  • History: a monthly statement to share, and filters for top-ups, purchases, refunds and dates, above the list of payments.

History. Every naira in and out, with simple filters.

One platform for the people who buy power, and the companies who make it

Aditus Pay is a prepaid electricity wallet and a recharge platform for rural mini-grids in Nigeria, a MeerTech product. It does two things: it holds the money you set aside for power, and it turns that money into an electricity token for your meter.

Customers

A wallet that becomes electricity

When Aditus Pay opens, you will put money in, then buy power for your own meter or for someone else's. One account will work for every mini-grid connected to Aditus Pay.

Your money is protected at every step

A wallet that holds money for electricity has to be careful. These are the rules Aditus Pay is built on.

Never charged twice

Every purchase carries one reference for life. If you tap twice, or your phone retries after the signal drops, it is still one purchase and one charge.

Books that always balance

Every naira is recorded twice, where it came from and where it went, so the totals must always match. A record cannot be changed after it is written.

One wallet, two ways to use it

It will be the same account, the same money and the same history, whichever way you choose. The app is coming to Google Play and the App Store. Buying electricity and adding money are not open yet.

From your wallet to your meter in four steps

This is how it will work once buying opens. The steps are the same in the app and on the website.

Your own meter or someone else's. We check the meter and show you the full price before you say yes.

4

Get your token

Your token appears in the app straight away. Type it into your meter and the power comes on.

Get paid for every unit of power you produce

If your company builds or runs mini-grids (these companies are often called RESCOs, Renewable Energy Service Companies), Aditus Pay connects to the system that manages your meters and gives your customers an easier way to pay. Your meters, your prices and your customers stay yours. No mini-grid company is connected yet, so talk to us if you want to be among the first.

Your own space

Your records are kept separate

Each power company has its own private, walled-off section of Aditus Pay, with its own records, its own staff logins and its own connection to its meters. No other company can see your customers or your money.

Every naira counted

Books that always balance

Every payment is written down twice, once where the money came from and once where it went, so the totals must always match. Records cannot be changed after they are written. You can trace every naira from the customer's wallet to what is owed to you.

Your back office

Manage it all from a browser

What these words mean

A few words on this website may be new to you. Here is what they mean.

Mini-grid A small power network, usually solar, that supplies electricity to one rural community instead of the national grid.
RESCO Renewable Energy Service Company. The company that builds and runs the mini-grid in your community and sells you its power.
Prepaid meter A meter where you pay for electricity first, then use it. When your units run out, you buy more.
Token The number you type into your prepaid meter to load the electricity you paid for.
Wallet Your Aditus Pay balance. You put money in, and it is used only to buy electricity.

You see the full price first. The app will be free to download. Each time you buy power, the amount you pay includes a service charge and VAT on that charge. The exact charge is shown before you pay.
